Behind Morocco’s Al – Hoceima Protests

Thousands have protested this week in Morocco after the gruesome death of a fishmonger, who was crushed to death inside a garbage truck in the northern city of Al-Hoceima. The fishmonger known as Mouchine Fikri was only 31 years old and met his untimely death after trying to protest about a municipal worker seizing and destroying his produce. After circulation of an image of his body on social media – head and arm sticking out from the lorry – nationwide protests were triggered in 20 cities across the North African country. Is it noteworthy that despite the epicentre of the protests being the northern Rif region major protests occurred in Marrakech, Casablanca and the capital Rabat
