Briefing: Boko Haram vs. Al Shabaab
Boko Haram and Al-Shabaab are responsible for a large share of atrocities in Africa, and remain two of the most dangerous armed groups on the continent, despite offensives by the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and the Nigerian army against the first, and the presence of the AU-led AMISOM troops in Somalia, against the second. Between January and June 2017, the two groups continued with their campaigns of terror, regularly striking both military and civilian targets, including NGOs. Both Boko Haram and Al-Shabaab maintained their abilities to operate in multiple countries (north-east Nigeria and northern Cameroon for the former; Somalia and Kenya for the latter).
Based on a review of six factors, this document offers a comparison of the two afore-mentioned groups, and covers the period of January to June 2017.
