Burundi Crisis: Actors and Possible Outcomes

During the past ten years Burundi has been attempting to recover from the darkest episode of its contemporary history: the 1993-2005 ethnic conflict, which resulted in an estimated 300, 000 deaths and millions of refugees. Regional and international efforts facilitated the signing of the historic Arusha Peace Agreement, paving the way for Burundi’s only second democratic elections since independence, and steering it towards economic progress, and ethnic and political tolerance.

However, these gains as well as the hopes of many Burundians are slowly vanishing into thin air, as the country has descended into unrest after president Pierre Nkurunziza announced his intention to run for a third consecutive term.
