Ivory Coast Referendum: Cleansing Scars of War

Ivory Coast is the world’s largest producer of cocoa and cashews with an annual economic growth of 9% since 2012. However, plagued by a recent civil conflict political stability is a vital component for the country to fulfil its potential and resume its impressive recovery. As the largest and most well-developed French speaking African country the upcoming constitutional referendum will also have profound regional implications. As the country prepares for the official results to be announced on November 1st, the question at this stage is whether the constitution will cement long term stability or rather illegitimately centralize power in the hands of President Ouattara’s camp.
