Kenya 2017 Election Disputes

Kenya held a general election on 8th August. President Uhuru Kenyatta won with 54, 27% of the votes cast, as per results announced by the IEBC electoral commission. His main rival, Raila Odinga, disputed the IEBC results, leading to protests in some of the main opposition’s strongholds. Odinga’s decision to petition the Supreme Court seems to have diffused the tension, though the sense of calm being perceived across the country may only be temporary.

This document analyzes some of the events surrounding the just-ended election, and how crucial the Supreme Court’s independence could be in saving Kenya from the brink.
