MENA – Regional Document: Tunisia
Tunisia, long considered the ‘Switzerland’ of the Middle East represents perhaps the last beacon of hope for the Arab Spring. Apart from starting the struggle for freedom, equality and dignity, Tunisia is the only country since 2011 that has sustained a sense of unity and democratic legitimacy throughout its political transition. Nevertheless the recent Bardo Museum attack on 18th March 2015 was a crude reminder that instability is still around the corner for the small North African nation. The two Islamic State–affiliated gunmen who stormed the National Bardo Museum killing 21 people (mostly foreign tourists) were named by authorities as Yassine Abidi and Hatem Khachnao and were killed in a security operation that followed the assault on the museum.
