Why Has the Militant Group Not Been Defeated?

In December 2016, the Nigerian government declared Boko Haram a defeated terrorist organization. After nearly six months of relatively reduced activism, Boko Haram has recently launched large scale attacks against civilian and military targets, indicating that, the group continues to pose the biggest security challenge in northeast Nigeria and the rest of the Lake Chad basin. This document reviews Boko Haram’s activism since January 2017 to paint a clear picture of the group today. Additionally, this document will analyze the factors contributing to Boko Haram’s resilience, while questioning the efficiency of the “military solution” as an attempt to eradicate the group in both Nigeria and the rest of the Lake Chad basin.
