Starting on the September 30 th 2015, Russia  began  air strikes over Syria initiating a direct  intervention in the four  year long crisis.  There have been many varying analyses of President Vladimir Putin’s decision to in tervene in  support of Bashar al – Assad’s regime which has been withering away following setbacks in Idlib, Aleppo and  Homs. However , apart from targeting terrorist forces such as IS and simply supporting al – Assad himself there  are indeed other dynamics at play.  Primarily  the  presence  of  NATO countries  in  t he  conflict  such  as  the  US  and  Turkey  has  placed a  more  international  dimension to the crisis. Tensions between NATO entities and Russia have  not seized  since the  Ukraine  crisis  revitalizing older  ‘ cold  war antics ’.  Decoding possible  motives,  overarching  strategies ,  current  targets and  potential outcomes  after the commencement of Russian military operations is critical to perceive what is  happening , and what could happen next in the Syrian crisis
