The Islamic State in Raqqa and Mosul

On June 11th, the international coalition launched a coordinated offensive against the Islamic State in the Syrian city of Raqqa, which is likely to fall after several years of occupation. The Battle of Mosul, Iraq, which started in October 2016, also seems to have reached its final stages as the Iraqi troops continue to gain ground in the city.

This paper attempts to shed light on the Islamic State in Raqqa and Mosul, answering questions such as: ‘Why and how did these cities come to be the capitals of the Islamic State? What have been the responses of the international coalition and jihadist forces? What would the consequences be of the ‘liberation; of both cities, for the allies and for the Islamic State?
