What have we learned from Moscow’s military parade?

Russia marked the 70th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany by staging its biggest ever military parade on May 9th, 2015. With over 20 world leaders in attendance and the country’s latest defence capabilities on display, the event paid tribute to the 26 million Russians killed during the Second World War. More importantly, Moscow also ensured to relate its historic sacrifice with the present-day struggles it faces through various forms of political rhetoric. In doing so, the leadership sent out a defiant message to its Western partners that the event was as much about the future as it was about the past.
